Iwate Koyo!

October 28, 2009

Crimson TideOrange AutumnWhen I got my Nikon D80 the first thing I wanted to photograph was the cherry blossoms in the spring. The second was the autumn foliage. I got the camera at the end of July, so I'll have to wait for spring to get the cherry blossoms.

Since I'm living in Sendai, autumn comes earlier and with more of a vengeance than in Tokyo.

I often go to Iwate on family visits, and for the longest time I had heard that Hachimantai City was where the colors are the best.

I was brought up into the mountains and through the trees. We eventually came to a river.

And a numa.

Ah, the koyo is beautiful this time of year.

I'm sure you've got quite a list of places to go in your quest to take great nature shots, but if you have time, I recommend driving south from Sendai, on Route 4 until Kakuda (I think) and then heading for a little town called Marumori. There are two amazing drives to be done there. One is along the Abukuma river (Abukumagawa - quite a famous path) and the other is along a mountain road to a part of town up in the hills called Hippo. The Autumn foliage along both drives is awesome. About an hour south of Sendai.

Tornadoes: Yeah, I want to take a drive into the mountains this weekend. But I think life might happen.

Insendai: Check this guy out - http://www.flickr.com/photos/jasohill/

Billy: Thank you for the tip. Is that river the famous one for hanami?

I can't remember if it's the same river, but the famous hanami area is in a town called Ogawara next to Kakuda, south of Iwanuma and Shibata, and just north of Shiroishi.

The river that has the famous hanami along it is the Shiroishi river, which runs through Ogawara and Shiroishi.

I can vouch for Marumori. I live in Kakuda just 10 minutes away. There's some really nice stuff out here.

Sixmats: jasohill makes me feel like I've been too lazy taking photos lately. I'll have to work harder!:)

Billy: I'll try to get down there this weekend.

Insendai: Here too.

Koyo is my favorite time of the year. I've been spending all my weekend recently bike riding to various places around my town in Yamanashi and taking photos. It goes by too quickly.

It's like hanami time. Way too quickly.
