Dinner at the Izakaya

November 12, 2008

japanese shellfishLast night my wife and I had dinner with her parents and we were taken to my mother-in-law's friend's izakaya.

I love izakayas because they're a casual place to go and have a variety of food. Usually the food is even good!

Last night's meal started with the otoshi; the small appetizer-like thing that you are given even though it wasn't ordered but you have to pay for. I guess it's another way to pull in some income. It was a plate of a few vegetables, some small pieces of fish, and this snail-like thing. It kind of tasted like sazae, but it was smaller.
shochu in japan
I opted for the shochu with water since I was with my wife's parents. The izakaya had an extensive list, and my father-in-law is from Kyushu and knows shochu. So I let him chose. I eventually switched over to beer a little later and was two-fisting for a short time. That didn't last long.

There was a curious thing on the menu--whale. I've had it before, and I had it again last night. I've tried whale two or three times since coming to Japan, but it was always served on a griddle. Last night the whale came raw as sashimi. If I ever eat it again, I'll eat it cooked. When it's cooked, it tasts somewhat like beef. When it's raw, it reminds me of basashi -- or raw horse.

Hi Thomas

I love the Izakaya style restaurants also, it is fun to try a lot of different kinds of foods. I have ran into whale since I have lived in Hokkaido also, but I have passed. I have no desire to eat whale.. Horse sashimi, I have heard of but would probably refuse that also. I did try deer sashimi this weekend, but was not excited about it.

I am more a vegetable and fish person... the horumon BBQ's here are another thing I don't care for.. Don't like guts..

I sound like a picky eater, from this comment, but in reality I am not at all.. Just don't care for meat too much. Everything else is on!!

I really love the tag cloud you are using, Do you mind me asking what the plugin is..

Thanks and I am a new subscriber.

interesting - have yet to try both whale or horse meat sashimi. Don't think I have the guts to try them! :)

I wouldn't have either if I had known what they were the first time I tried them.

Wild game is popular during the festive season n I had to learn it the hard way :-( First Xmas I had a gamey piece of beef, or so I thought until my host said that it was horse meat n man (!!) did my little tummy heaved n I felt really really sick ! My hubby tried to calm me down n said to think of it as beef but I just couldn't.

2nd Xmas dinner which I thought was chicken, turned out to be rabbits (so called in NL) n I was sick again :-/ I do associate certain meat as unfit for consumption. Besides, I see horses at a meadow closeby n most of my neighbours hv rabbits as pets for their kids !

Since then, menu's r agreed upon to avoid another disaster for me.

I think most people have a stigma attached to at least one type of animal. I'd never eat a monkey.

I'm always fascinated to see Japanese food especially the sweets, because they're also served artistically, well, by default, Japanese are artistic nation, I think.
But it's sad that whale and dolphins are also in the menu there.

For me, Sushi Kani and Tobiko, Ebi tempura, beef shabu shabu and miso soup are already great!! :))
Btw, is Morozoff still famous there? Love their choco cakes!!

Food is definitely an art form here.

I've never heard of Morozoff. But I've been out of Tokyo for a while now.
